＊ノルウェー語ではsame”サーメ”と発音しますが、ここでは「サーミ」と記します。
1930年代のスウェーデンを舞台にした『サーミの血』(2016年）は、試写会で2回観ました。
少数民族サーミ人は、スウェーデン人による差別的な環境で育つ主人公少女エレ・マリャ。
賢い彼女は、積極的にスウェーデン語を学び、普通にスウェーデン人と恋をしたい、もっと勉強をしたいという夢が芽生えますが、様々な壁が立ちはだかります。
試写1回目は、当時の「サーミ人同化政策」の描写にかなりのショックを受け、「支配語」である劇中のスウェーデン語にアレルギーまで出る始末・・・。
2回目は、もう少し落ち着いて観ることができましたが、主人公の強さに圧倒されましたね。
ノルウェー、スウェーデン、フィンランド、ロシアの一部に住むサーミ人。かつての抑圧と同化政策は、外国人のためのノルウェー語テキストでも紹介されています。
サーミ人の歴史には多少は知識がありましたが、それが映像になると「こ、これは・・・」と驚きの連続でした。
1996年、まだノルウェーに留学していた時、やはりサーミ人についての短編映画を観たことがあります。
キリスト教に強制改宗されたサーミ人が、十字架に磔にされた映像がスクリーンに広がり、やはりショッキングでした。
本映画で描かれる当時のサーミ人への偏見や差別、同化政策について驚く方が多いでしょう。あのスウェーデンでこんなひどい仕打ちが・・・（ノルウェーでも事情は一緒です）。
さらに印象的なのは、登場人物たちの「まなざし」。
スウェーデン人の視線を避けるように、終始、うつむき加減に行動するサーミ人たち。主人公エレ・マリァは上目づかいに挑むようなまなざしを、周囲の人に向けます。
彼女の意志の強さを象徴するように感じました。

同時に、スウェーデン人たちがサーミ人たちを見る時の「まなざし」も、心に残ります。差別する側が投げかけるまさざしは、スクリーン越しに私にも突き刺さるように感じました。
差別されるサーミの環境から、主人公は逃れ夢を実現しようとしますが、次々と試練が降りかかります。
こちらの予想の斜め上を行くエレ・マリァの行動や言動は、ともかく強い。
いばらの道を突き進む過程で、彼女の心はどれくらいの傷を負ったのでしょうか。踏みつけられ、打ちのめされても、もっと広くて自由な世界を希求する姿は、心を打ちます。
映画資料のアマンダ・シェーネル監督のインタビューから引用しましょう。
「主人公がなぜこんなに強いのか、とよく聞かれるのですが、サーミ族は、タフであるように親から教育されます。寄宿学校に入るのも強くないとダメだし、弱いといじめられるし、トナカイ放牧業も、ケガや死亡事故が多い最も危険で過酷な仕事の１つですから。」なるほど・・・。
シリアスな展開の映画ですが、主人公が慣れないデンマーク体操をやることになったシーンではくすっと笑っちゃいました。
私もデンマーク体操をやった経験があるんですけど、動きが変なんですよね。他にも、スウェーデン人の家で出されたケーキに戸惑う姿などディテールに説得力があります。
映画の舞台はスウェーデンですが、主人公姉妹を演じているのはノルウェー在住のサーミ人とのこと。俳優経験がないのが信じられないくらいの迫真の演技を見せてくれます。
サーミ人や北欧に前知識がない方でも、強くお勧めしたい映画です！
